Frequently Asked Questions

Can I teach my child myself without the help of an SLP?

We definitely recommend consulting with an SLP to get an evaluation and possibly professional therapy, especially if your child is highly unintelligible or does not seem to be making progress.  However, Clarity Speech and Language’s online courses can help you improve your child’s speech skills more rapidly and achieve better results.

How long will my child need speech therapy?

There are many factors that will determine how long your child may need speech therapy.  It depends on the age of your child, how severe the errors are, how motivated the child is to learn, and how often he/she practices. The time spent in therapy could range from 3 months to 3 years or more.

How old does my child have to be to start working on speech therapy?

Teaching speech skills starts as soon as your child is born!  Model speech sounds early on.  Talk to your child as much as possible and reward any attempts at communication.  When your child is old enough to sit still, listen to you, and watch your instructions, then you can begin teaching in a more structured way. The younger the child, the shorter your speech practice sessions will be, and therapy sessions will be spent primarily teaching you how to work with your child.

Do you teach adults?

Yes!  We can work with adults on speech sounds, language skills, stuttering, apraxia or aphasia.  We can even work on accent reduction.

Do you take insurance?

We don’t bill insurance directly; however, we provide you with a ‘superbill’ — a monthly statement that lists all the information you need to submit a claim to your insurance or HSA provider.  Speech therapy is an eligible expense for your health savings account (HSA), flexible spending account (FSA), or health reimbursement arrangement (HRA).  You may pay using your card.

I’ve been providing therapy to children and adults since 2011. I adapt a variety of therapy techniques to best suit the student’s needs and personality. I believe that lots of practice and a little bit of humor are the keys to speech and language improvement. Also, I’ve learned that parent support is crucial for a child to succeed!

I was born on an island, grew up in the desert, and now live by the mountains. My awesome husband and I enjoy e-biking and music, and hanging out with the kids and grandkids. In my spare time, I enjoy photography, reading, walking and creating courses for parents. I also love to eat peanut m&m’s and binge-watch Netflix. What can I say? I’m human!

We have had a really good experience with Clarity Speech and Language.

We used Clarity Speech & Language with Carol. Both of my kids needed help with their ‘Rs’, they also were in speech therapy at school. I feel that if we hadn’t done speech with Carol they wouldn’t have progressed as quickly as with just doing speech at school. Carol also caught my sons struggle with saying his ‘Ls’ and his previous therapist didn’t catch that or the school therapist. I really liked how Carol had my kids practice telling their own stories with their Rs to help them talk in real life conversations rather than just speech language homework. She is very good at paying attention to the little things in their speech and being picky (in a good way) to make sure their speech sounds natural and clear. I would highly recommend Carol! Thank you Carol for the work you have done with my children.

There are also many tips and tricks to creatively practice speech with your children in informal settings and for spur of the moment opportunities. I’ve learned so much. This last week I was able to use many of these ideas with three of my grandchildren who were visiting. It was exciting for me (and them!) to see real progress!

Carol is warm and kind-highly recommend her!
